Fort McAllister Park, Georgia

Friday 22nd October
Fort McAllister goes back to 1863 during the Civil War between the Confederates and the Union.  The Fort's unique earth mounds were erected by the Confederate army to protect Savannah.  The Fort withstood several major naval attacks.

We walked around the gun emplacements and took photographs of the tall sharp palisades used to deter the enemy.

There were 10 cannons on view and several powder magazines.   The Hot Shot Gun was a 35 pound gun that aimed red hot cannon balls at the wooden ships.

We went underground to a bomb shelter that was once used as a hospital and supply area.

The museum had an excellent display of artifacts and we watched a 20 minute film on the historic site.

Brunswick

Lovely atmosphere in this sleepy little dockyard.  Lots of  shrimp boats in the harbour waiting to go out.

During World War II Brunswick shipyards constructed 99 Liberty ships for the navy.  In the Park there is a 23ft model as a memorial to those ships and their builders.
